How much does a service upgrade cost in Toronto?
We get this question a lot, so today we decided to answer it !
The cost of a service upgrade in Toronto can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the size of the electrical service, the complexity of the installation, and the amount of electrical work required.
In general, a basic service upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 CAD. However, if you need to upgrade to a higher amperage, such as 400 amps or 600 amps, the cost can increase significantly.
It’s important to note that the cost of a service upgrade may also include additional expenses such as permits, and inspection depending on the area and the specific requirements of the job.
In this article we will be breaking down all these costs with an example of an old Toronto bungalow!
The most costly overhead service upgrade in Toronto is a mast upgrade as seen in the picture above.
Let’s break it down;
In general, an overhead upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to complete, other factors that can affect the installation time include the condition of the existing electrical system and the accessibility of the electrical panel and service equipment.
A Contractor would charge anywhere from $2400-$4000 for materials and labor. The higher-end installation would be the need for a guy wire as additional support for the mast, an upgrade of the ground wire to a #6 conductor, the number of existing circuits, and if the branch wiring needs to be extended to reach the new height of the panel to meet Ontario Codes.
After these have been determined, the contractor will need to also factor in the cost of inspection and hydro fees. Typically, this costs around $900 for a service upgrade with Toronto Hydro and an ESA inspection.
This brings our total cost to $3300-4900 to bring your home up to 200Amp
At Foxwood Electric we take care of everything. We start the process by having a free in-home estimate which typically takes 20 minutes, during which we take our time to explain to the client the process in depth and talk over the types of panels and sizes of panels we recommend.
